| In 2011, the event which has made history in motorsports is back. 110 years after the creation of this epic race, and in the year that celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the 2011 Giro d'Italia Automobilistico will start from Turin in October and will reach Rome after five days of competition covering over 1,500 km. The route for this event is based on precedents set by the Automobile Club of Turin, from 1973 to 1980 and again in 1988 and 1989. It features alternating circuit races and timed road stages. The circuits featured in the 2011 race are: MONZA, FRANCIACORTA, MODENA, IMOLA, MUGELLO, MAGIONE and VALLELUNGA. Competitive stages will be set in Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. Spectators will see a great show, as in previous years, with drivers from various specialties: circuit, rally, endurance racing and hill climbing. Teams may include two drivers and a navigator to allow circuit and rally drivers to alternate the driving. Participation in the Giro will be open to modern circuit and rally cars. The public will see fabulous GT in action, such as the Ferrari 430, Porsche GT3, Aston Martin, Audi R8, Lamborghini Gallardo, Maserati Trofeo, Lotus Exige and Chevrolet Corvette. Also one make series models, like Copa Seat, 500 Abarth, Renault and vehicles from current international competitions: WTCC, DTM, V8 Superstars, 24h Nürburgring, together with the S2000 cars such as Peugeot 207, Punto Abarth, Skoda Fabia, Ford Fiesta, the WRC Citroen C4 and Xsara and Ford Focus, the Group N Subaru and Mitsubishi, the Group R Renault Clio, Fiat 500 Abarth and the Group A. Today the route has been designed so that modern cars, and selected prestigious historic cars, can compete alongside each other. It is anticipated that cars from the last races of the Giro (1973 to 1980) will compete: Lancia Stratos, Beta MonteCarlo Turbo, De Tomaso Pantera, Fiat Abarth 124 and 131, Porsche Carrera, Ferrari 308GTB, Opel Kadett. Above all, the convoy of the GIRO D’ITALIA AUTOMOBILISTICO will not be just a sporting event for the competitors: for the first time it will be televised, and the public can also watch at the circuits and the road stages along the way, as well as having the chance to see the cars at the service parks, which will be in major cities along the route. Join the Giro in the year of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, as we drive and compete from Turin to Rome, and experience Italian style, the sport, the passion and the culture. |
